The PA system, common on Korean beauty products, tells you how long UVA rays are blocked; four plus signs is the highest level available. Our analysis of 31 SPF and sunscreen products shows an average score of 67 out of 100, but a score range stretching from 21 to 85 — that's a massive gap in actual quality at similar prices. The mistake most buyers make is treating all SPF 50+ products as equivalent because they share a label claim. They aren't. The low-scorers in this category tend to use outdated UV filter combinations, skip meaningful skincare actives, and rely on packaging and marketing language to justify the price rather than formulation quality.

Relying on Amazon star ratings is another trap. Amazon ratings reflect customer satisfaction, which is shaped by packaging, scent, and texture — not whether the UV filter system is photostable or the sunscreen actually achieves its rated protection when applied at real-world amounts. A product with 4.6 stars and 3,000 reviews might still rank in the bottom quarter of our scored products because its formula is mediocre by evidence-based standards.

Many buyers also apply far too little product. Sunscreen is tested at 2mg per square centimetre of skin — for the face alone, that's roughly a quarter teaspoon, which is more than most people use. Using half the recommended amount doesn't give you half the protection; it can reduce SPF 50 to the equivalent of SPF 7 or lower. This means a well-formulated SPF 50+ applied properly will outperform a "premium" SPF 50+ used sparingly.

They tend to be lightweight, sit invisibly on skin, and work well under makeup. The trade-off is that some chemical filters — particularly older ones like oxybenzone — can irritate sensitive skin, so check the ingredient list if you have reactive skin.

Mineral sunscreens use zinc oxide or titanium dioxide as physical blockers, reflecting UV away from the skin. They're the first choice for very sensitive skin, rosacea, and post-procedure use, and they're considered safe during pregnancy when some chemical filter options are uncertain. The downside is texture: they often feel thicker and can leave that white residue. Newer micronised mineral formulas reduce this but rarely eliminate it entirely.

Hybrid formulas attempt the middle ground, using a lower concentration of minerals alongside chemical filters to reduce white cast while keeping some of the skin-tolerance benefits of physical blockers. These can be a good option if you find pure chemical filters irritating but can't tolerate the appearance of a full mineral formula.

These may still carry an SPF 50 claim, but the formula work behind it is thin.

The £10 to £14 range is where the best performance sits. The Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun Rice Probiotics SPF 50+ PA++++ at £10.05 scored 85 out of 100 — the highest in our analysis — and also carries the best value-for-money score at 88 out of 100. For under a tenner on a 50ml bottle, it's delivering PA++++ UVA protection, rice extract, and a probiotic-enhanced formula with no white cast. The PURITO Daily Soft Touch Sunscreen at £13.99 scored 81 and adds ceramides to the mix, making it a strong option if your skin needs extra barrier support.

The £14 to £18 range includes the Beauty of Joseon Aqua Fresh at £15.11 (80/100) and the COSRX Ultra-Light Invisible Sunscreen at £12.45 (79/100) — both good products, though neither substantially outperforms the original Beauty of Joseon at nearly half the price difference. Above £18, you're predominantly paying for branding. The top end of this market at £25.97 shows no corresponding jump in scores — our analysis found no product above £18 that outscored the £10.05 top pick. Set your budget at around £10 to £15 and look for PA++++ alongside SPF 50+ rather than chasing a higher price tag.
