Brown Rice

Also known as: Whole Grain Rice, Wholegrain Brown Rice

Overview

Brown rice is a whole grain carbohydrate widely used in dog food as an easily digestible energy source. Unlike white rice, brown rice retains its bran and germ layers, providing more fibre, B vitamins, and minerals. It is one of the most well-tolerated grains for dogs.

How Brown Rice Works

Brown rice provides complex carbohydrates that are broken down into glucose for energy. The intact bran layer provides insoluble fibre that aids intestinal transit, while the germ provides B vitamins (thiamine, niacin, B6) and minerals (magnesium, phosphorus, manganese). It has a moderate glycaemic index, providing more sustained energy release than white rice.

Benefits

  • Highly digestible carbohydrate — well tolerated by most dogs
  • Good source of B vitamins and minerals (magnesium, manganese)
  • Provides dietary fibre from retained bran layer
  • Moderate glycaemic index for sustained energy
  • Less likely to trigger food sensitivities than wheat or corn

Side Effects & Cautions

  • Not suitable for dogs with grain allergies or intolerances
  • Higher in arsenic than some alternative carb sources
  • Dogs do not require grains — it is an energy source, not essential

Who Should Use Brown Rice

Most dogs tolerate brown rice well; dogs needing easily digestible carbohydrates; dogs with sensitive stomachs (often recommended by vets during recovery).

Who Should Avoid It

Dogs with confirmed grain allergies; dogs on grain-free elimination diets.

Recommended Concentration

10-30% of dry dog food formulas

Scientific Evidence

2 peer-reviewed studies cited. All links lead to PubMed abstracts.

Evaluation of cereal grains in canine diet formulation

Brown rice showed high starch digestibility (>90%) in dogs and was well tolerated with minimal gastrointestinal side effects.

Comparison of nutrient digestibility between grain-free and grain-inclusive dog diets

Grain-inclusive diets using rice as the primary carbohydrate showed equivalent or superior nutrient digestibility compared to grain-free alternatives.
