Glucosamine (for Dogs)

Also known as: Glucosamine HCl, Glucosamine Hydrochloride, Glucosamine Sulphate

Overview

Glucosamine is an amino sugar naturally found in cartilage. In dog food, it is added as a supplement to support joint health, particularly for senior dogs or breeds prone to hip and joint issues like German Shepherds and Labradors.

How Glucosamine (for Dogs) Works

Glucosamine serves as a building block for glycosaminoglycans (GAGs), which are essential components of cartilage and synovial fluid. Supplementation aims to provide the raw materials needed for cartilage repair and maintenance, while also stimulating chondrocytes (cartilage cells) to produce more proteoglycans and collagen.

Benefits

  • Supports cartilage repair and maintenance in aging joints
  • May reduce symptoms of osteoarthritis and improve mobility
  • Combined with chondroitin, provides synergistic joint support
  • Helps maintain synovial fluid viscosity for joint lubrication

Side Effects & Cautions

  • Generally very well tolerated by dogs
  • Rare cases of gastrointestinal upset (diarrhoea, vomiting)
  • Shellfish-derived glucosamine may cause issues for dogs with shellfish allergies
  • Effects may take 4-8 weeks to become noticeable

Who Should Use Glucosamine (for Dogs)

Senior dogs; large breeds prone to joint issues (Labradors, German Shepherds, Golden Retrievers); active working dogs; dogs recovering from joint surgery.

Who Should Avoid It

Generally safe for all dogs; puppies usually do not need supplementation unless advised by a vet.

Recommended Concentration

300-1500mg per day depending on dog size; in food: 400-800 mg/kg of food
