Salicylic Acid (BHA)

Also known as: Beta Hydroxy Acid, BHA, 2-Hydroxybenzoic Acid

Overview

Salicylic acid is a beta hydroxy acid (BHA) that is oil-soluble, allowing it to penetrate into pores and exfoliate from within. It is the gold standard topical treatment for acne, blackheads, and congested skin.

How Salicylic Acid (BHA) Works

Unlike water-soluble AHAs, salicylic acid is lipophilic — it dissolves in oil and can penetrate the sebum-filled pore lining. It breaks down the bonds between dead skin cells (desmolysis), clears pore blockages, and has anti-inflammatory and mild antibacterial properties. It also inhibits prostaglandin synthesis, reducing redness.

Benefits

  • Penetrates and clears clogged pores (comedolytic)
  • Reduces acne, blackheads, and whiteheads
  • Anti-inflammatory — reduces redness associated with breakouts
  • Exfoliates without the irritation of scrubs
  • Controls excess oil production

Side Effects & Cautions

  • Can cause dryness and peeling, especially initially
  • May increase sun sensitivity — SPF recommended
  • Not suitable for very dry or eczema-prone skin types
  • Should not be combined with multiple other exfoliants simultaneously

Who Should Use Salicylic Acid (BHA)

Those with oily, acne-prone, or congested skin. Excellent for blackheads, whiteheads, and mild to moderate acne.

Who Should Avoid It

Very dry or eczema-prone skin, those using multiple exfoliating acids concurrently, pregnant women (high-dose oral salicylates are contraindicated).

Recommended Concentration

0.5% – 2% for leave-on products. Up to 30% in professional peels.
