Salmon Oil (Omega-3)
Also known as: Fish Oil, Omega-3 Fatty Acids, EPA/DHA, Marine Oils
Overview
Salmon oil is a rich source of omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA, which are essential for dogs' skin, coat, joint, and brain health. Unlike plant-based omega-3s (ALA from flaxseed), fish-derived EPA and DHA are directly bioavailable to dogs.
How Salmon Oil (Omega-3) Works
EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) are incorporated into cell membranes throughout the body, modulating inflammatory responses. EPA reduces production of inflammatory eicosanoids, while DHA is critical for brain and retinal development. In joints, EPA helps reduce cartilage degradation and inflammatory markers.
Benefits
- • Supports healthy skin and a shiny, glossy coat
- • Anti-inflammatory properties help with joint health and mobility
- • DHA supports cognitive development in puppies and cognitive function in senior dogs
- • May reduce itching and skin inflammation in dogs with allergies
- • Supports cardiovascular health
Side Effects & Cautions
- • Excess fish oil can cause loose stools or diarrhoea
- • May interact with blood-thinning medications
- • Quality concerns: rancid or contaminated fish oils can be harmful
- • High doses may affect blood clotting time
Who Should Use Salmon Oil (Omega-3)
All dogs benefit from omega-3s; particularly beneficial for dogs with joint issues, skin problems, puppies (brain development), and senior dogs.
Who Should Avoid It
Dogs on blood-thinning medication should consult a vet; dogs with fish allergies.
