CLA (conjugated linoleic acid) and omega-3 fatty acids are both lipid-based compounds, yet their biological actions differ considerably. CLA — found naturally in dairy products and ruminant meat — is most commonly studied in the context of body composition, while omega-3 EPA and DHA are the subject of SACN guidance recommending at least 450 mg combined per week. Emerging research suggests that when taken together, these two fatty acids may exert complementary effects on fat metabolism and metabolic markers. Evidence remains early-stage, and individual responses are likely to vary depending on baseline health, diet quality, and activity levels.

How They Interact

The potential synergy between CLA and omega-3 stems from their distinct molecular targets. The trans-10, cis-12 isomer of CLA has been shown in cell-based research to inhibit lipoprotein lipase (LPL) — an enzyme central to the uptake of circulating triglycerides into adipose tissue — and to reduce adipocyte lipid accumulation (PMID 11257467). Evidence also suggests this CLA isomer modulates PPARgamma, a nuclear receptor involved in adipocyte differentiation and lipid storage signalling. Omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA) operate via a different route: a randomised controlled trial found that omega-3 supplementation significantly reduced macrophage infiltration and MCP-1 expression within adipose tissue in insulin-resistant individuals (PMID 23328126), attenuating the chronic low-grade inflammation associated with excess body fat. A direct combination trial (Sneddon et al., 2008; PMID 18356842) found that co-supplementation prevented abdominal fat accumulation, raised fat-free mass, and increased adiponectin in younger obese men — suggesting the two compounds may act on complementary aspects of adipose biology. Human evidence remains limited and further clinical trials are needed.

Timing & Dosage Guidance

Both CLA and omega-3 are fat-soluble and are best absorbed when taken with a meal containing dietary fat. Research does not indicate these supplements need to be separated from each other; existing combination studies have co-administered them without reported absorption conflicts. Splitting doses across two meals — for example CLA with breakfast and omega-3 with the main evening meal — may help tolerability for those prone to gastrointestinal discomfort with fatty acid supplements. If taking fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, or K2) alongside either supplement, spacing by 2–3 hours is a reasonable precaution to avoid potential competition for absorption. Individual responses may vary.

Most human trials on CLA have used 3–6 g per day, typically as a 50:50 blend of c9,t11 and t10,c12 isomers (e.g. Tonalin or Clarinol). The primary combination study (Sneddon et al., 2008; PMID 18356842) used 3 g/day CLA alongside 3 g/day omega-3. For omega-3, SACN recommends a minimum of 450 mg EPA+DHA per week from dietary or supplement sources; research studies often use 2–4 g/day. No established combined dosage protocol exists for these two supplements. Individuals considering higher CLA doses should note that evidence suggests a modest elevation in LDL cholesterol and lipoprotein(a) at higher doses (Gaullier et al., 2004; PMID 15159244); seeking professional guidance is advisable.

Research to date does not indicate any pharmacological reason to separate CLA and omega-3 supplementation. The combination trial by Sneddon et al. As with any supplement regimen, individual responses may vary, and those with existing health conditions should seek professional guidance.

Both compounds are generally well tolerated at typical supplemental doses.
